Introduction:

We learned last week that we can avoid being boat potatoes by understanding and applying truths about Jesus Christ. Water-walking is required in order to win in Jesus, so each day we must endeavor to “get our feet wet.” On tonight, we will begin a discussion of discerning God’s call on our lives.

I. The Example of Peter (Matthew 14:28-29)

It is good to remember that there is a difference between foolishness and faith. How does this truth apply to Peter?
• Calling or careless?
• Peter’s action and my action
• On redemption and restraint
• Contrasting risk and recklessness

II. Recognizing My Raw Material

Peter confirms the call in Matt. 14:28. What else is involved in this task?
• Paul and “raw material”
• Raw material and me. Question: Can you think of an “assembly moment?” An experience/situation that helped you see more clearly what your raw materials are?
• Considering my committee
• Positions in Proverbs

Take-home challenge: (1) Thoroughly consider the information presented in this portion of our discussion. (2) Identify the elements described above. (3) Convene your “clearness committee.” What will you discover about your life and calling?

III. Calling and Comfort

There is a difference between a calling and a career.
• Servants and Scripture
• The fear factor
• Comfort in my call

A calling is not comfortable, but it is compelling because the person of God is driven to fulfill God’s call on his or her life.

Conclusion:

You will always be intrigued by the question of “calling.” However, if you are mindful of the teaching of Scripture and some social science realities, answering the question, “What is my calling” may not be as difficult as you think!
