“On Waiting for Perfection”
Adult Sunday Bible Study
West Broad Church of Christ
July 4 and 11, 2010
Dr. J.L. Nesmith, Jr., Facilitator

Introduction:
Question: What would have happened if the American colonies waited for the perfect situation before declaring independence from Britain?  Nevertheless, most people of faith desire perfection in their walk with God.  How are we to understand and internalize this notion?  Let us consider  “perfection,” the Scriptures, and ourselves as we answer that question.

I.  A Preacher’s Job Application
You are on your church’s search committee reviewing applications for the pulpit minister position.  You see this letter.

·         An applicant’s presentation

Question:  How do you respond to this applicant?  Would you hire “Paul” to preach for your church? Why or why not?

II.  A Contemporary Application
All human beings have imperfections, but those imperfections don’t prevent God from using us.  Question:  Can you think of “an imperfect person” who has made a difference in your life?   Still, certain character prerequisites must be met if we are to effectively serve in the kingdom.

·        The prerequisite of willingness

·        The prerequisite of submission

·        The prerequisite of reliance

Question:  Have you met these three prerequisites in your life?  Which are you still working toward?  How do you know?

Summation:
As we have seen in our Bible studies and personal observations, nobody is perfect.  In fact, we would do better to “declare our independence” from the notion of perfection!  Nevertheless, we can have joy today because God makes us perfect in Christ (Rom 3:21-26).  Think of it — only heaven could ensure perfection despite imperfection.  Why not submit to the Father and walk in his perfection today?
