Introduction:
We humans desire growth in several areas of our lives.  But how does growth result?  We will consider this question first from an individual perspective.  We will then expand our discussion and think about growth from a congregational perspective.  Grab your Bible, and let the exploration begin!

I.  Human Standards for Growth
Persons and institutions often affirm an ability to achieve growth through their wisdom.

·         The affirmation at Yale

·         The affirmation at Carnegie Melon

·         The affirmation at Princeton.  Question:  What is the problem with each of these activities?

II.  Consideration of Spiritual Growth
We can safely say that growth based on human will is growth that is not healthy. What is the alternative?

·          Growth that differentiates between above and below

·         Growth determined by purpose and source.  Question:  How easy is it to experience this type of growth?  What do you believe is involved?  What difficulties have you faced in your growth toward Christlikeness?

III.  The Painful Part of Growth
Growth is necessary and desired, but it is also painful.   Paul spoke to this reality.

·          The pain of principle

·         The pain of criticism.  Question:  is there one behavior or understanding that indicates conclusively that you have grown spiritually?  What is it?  Why do you cite this example?

Conclusion:
Many persons (and institutions) make claims regarding their ability to facilitate growth.  However, the only growth that is lasting and physically and spiritually beneficial is growth experienced “the Jesus way.” This kind of growth is challenging and difficult, but it will culminate one day in maturity promised by God himself.  Think about it, and let’s do our best to seek the Father’s face and “grow up” together!
