“Christianity at West Broad: Adjust as Needed”
Adult Sunday Morning Bible Class
West Broad Church of Christ
June 13 and 20, 2010
Dr. J.L. Nesmith, Jr., Facilitator
Introduction:
Approximately 85% of Americans consider themselves to be Christian. Yet, there is a glaring chasm between what we say and what we do.
· The evidence of crime and prison;
· The evidence of legislated immorality
Following God requires more than words. It requires major personal adjustments.
I. Adjustment is Necessary
Many people make decisions for God, but they are not dedicated to him. These people fail in their relationship with the Lord because they do not make the appropriate adjustments.
· Adjustment of what’s important;
· Adjustment in behavior;
· Adjustment in allegiance;
· Adjustment in commitment
Words of faith are no substitute for a life of faith. How do you compare?
II. The Core of the Matter
We must understand that God requires absolute surrender. People of faith must divest themselves of personal interests and become consumed with heaven’s interests.
· The divesting of the psalmist;
· The divesting of Deuteronomy;
· The tragedy of “partial” divesting
Question: Have you reached a place in your faith life here at West Broad where your will and agenda have been eclipsed by God’s? Or is it the other way around? As we exist on this planet, no priority or behavior is to supersede the Lord.
Summation:
We cannot talk about faith and live “faithlessly.” Following God requires men and women to make major adjustments. Are you willing to adjust?
