Chapter Review and Current Objective:
John showed his readers in Chapters 4 and 5 that God is ultimately in control of the events of this world. They were also assured of the power and person of Jesus Christ. But what were they to make of the seals presented in Chapter 5? How does the message of the seals speak to us? Grab your Bible, and let’s see!
I. The First Six Seals (6:1-17)
What do we see forming in the first four seals? What is portrayed?
· 6:1-2 – Discussion of a white horse
· 6:3-4 – Discussion of a red horse
· 6:5-6 – Discussion of a black horse
n The idea and Ezekiel
n The idea and Josephus
n The idea and Israel
· 6:7-8 – Discussion of a pale horse. Question: How does this rider differ from the previous three?
The first four seals seem to be an indictment against the Roman Empire. Apparent power and victory are not ultimate power and victory. John moves next from earth to heaven.
· 6:9-11 – Discussion of the martyrs in heaven. Reflection: Note the reasons the martyrs were slain. How does this coincide with Peter’s thoughts (1 Peter 4:14-16)?
· 6:12-17 – Discussion of the sixth seal.
n vv. 12-13, the moon as blood
n v. 14, collapse of cosmic system
n v. 15, indication of seven classes
Summation:
What can be said of the six seals of Chapter 6? John’s intent is to reassure his readers in order that — despite their current negative circumstance – they will know and have confidence in the power, presence, and plans of God. The apostle’s message was empowering and comforting when it was first presented 2,000 years ago. It remains so for people of faith, today.
