Chapter Review and Current Objective:

We discussed the image of Christ and John’s commission to present the message of the Lord to the seven churches.  We will now begin our examination of the seven churches.  What message does the Lord have for them?  How does their message speak to us today?

I.                   Discussion of the Letters:  Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamos, and Thyatira

There are recurring forms in the letters to the churches.  How do we know this is true, and what does it mean?

·        The Letter to Ephesus (2:1-7)

n      A word of heresy

n      Words of congratulations, praise, and problem

Question:  What does the warning to the church in Ephesus say to West Broad as we endeavor toward doctrinal purity?

·        The Letter to Smyrna (2:8-11)

n      Synagogue sayings

n      Identity issues

n      Conflict and comfort

The church at Smyrna is not condemned, but they are encouraged.  Question:  What does this teach us about the common doctrine of wealth and health for the Christian?

·        The Letter to Pergamos (2:12-17)

n      Status and history.  Question: Based on evidence in the book (chapter 17), what is the meaning of “where Satan’s throne is?”

n      Doctrine and morals. Question:  What does this say to the “silence” of the church today?  What does it say to “silence” at West Broad?

The saints at Pergamos were located in a place of sin but were called to live above sin.

·        The Letter to Thyatira (2:18-29)

n      Congratulations and challenge

n      Repentance and response

n      Punishment and people.  Question:  In view of John’s message to Thyatira, is “mixing” ever allowable?  Why?

Summation:

We have seen that Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamos, and Thyatira each contain a message for John’s audience and for us at West Broad. But will we listen to the message?
