Introduction:
In our first lesson we learned several truths regarding angels.  Specifically,

·        people have an interest in angels that is not biblically informed

·        angels are spiritual beings created by God and serve as his heavenly messengers

·        angels are beings of personality; they possess will, intellect, and emotion

·        angels are powerful and immortal

·        angels appear to have a hierarchical structure

As we continue our discussion, we will direct our attention toward the work of angels.  How did they engage human beings in Scripture?  We will explore this question.

I.  The Work of Angels Then
We have considered the danger of “theoretical” conclusions in that they force us to create truths about the nature and work of angels based on feelings or notions.  The only way to avoid this pitfall is to consult the word of God.  When we do so, what do we learn about the engagement of angels and humans in biblical times?

·        Angels brought God’s response to prayer

·        Angels exacted God’s punishment

·        Angels kept demons “in check”

·        Angels protected the people of God

·        Angels escorted Christians to paradise

We see the efforts of good angels, but what can be said of their counterparts?

·        Evil angels opposed the work of God

·        Evil angels afflicted the people of God.  How?

n      They redirected their priorities

n      They worked to deceive and confuse

n      They attacked and destroyed

Question:  Why do Satan and his angels commit so much time and energy into battling the people of God?

1.      The response of destination

2.      The response of domination

3.      The response of determination

Conclusion:
Scripture is clear regarding the work of good and bad angels toward humans in biblical times.  But the question that comes to the mind of the contemporary believer is, “Has their work changed in modern times?”  We will answer that question in our third and final lesson of this series: “Angels – How Do They Serve Now?”  Make plans to join us!
