Working for Here and Eternity!
July 27, 2008
Have you ever thought of your job beyond your job? Several years ago, three stonemasons were building a cathedral when a stranger wandered by. The first stonemason was carrying rocks and placing them in a pile. “What are you doing?” asked the stranger. “I’m carrying rocks. What does it look like?” The stranger asked the second laborer, who was laying bricks, what he was doing. “I’m building a wall,” he replied. Several feet away, the stranger observed a third worker. “What are you doing?” he queried. The worker smiled and said, “I’m building a cathedral to the glory of God!” Three different workers; three different perspectives. One person saw only the immediate result of his effort. The second worker had a view that was slightly expanded but still extremely limited - he could see no farther then the wall he was constructing. But the third worker had a comprehensive view of his job. He saw beyond his present task an ultimate, completed reality - the construction of a cathedral. What about you, friend? How do you view your job? Are you simply completing a task and getting a paycheck, or do you see yourself contributing to the construction of something that is grand and glorious? As the psalmist extolled, “May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us - yes, establish the work of our hands” (Psa. 90:17). Remember: your job is much more than 9 to 5. We are building the kingdom each day, and those eight hours impact eternity. Think about it. -JLNJR (Resource: H.
