The ‘Wholeness’ of Our Faith
July 13, 2008
You may have heard news reports regarding efforts of the so-called “Christian Right” as they work to influence national policy. It is true that several of these organizations have a moderate voice and do some good but, in my thinking, perhaps more good could be done if people of faith were Christians to the left, middle, and right! What does this mean? Simply that too many Christians tend to compartmentalize their lives. One study found that we think of themselves as individuals first, Americans second, and Christians third. What does this mean, friends? Simply that our thinking will guide our behavior! If I see myself as an individual first, then meeting my selfish needs will have priority in my life. Once those needs are satisfied, then I can begin to think of my responsibility to my country. It is only after my needs are met and my citizenship issues are addressed that I will take time to think of my responsibilities to God. Friends, there is something wrong with this picture! Can we as Christians really expect to impact our nation for Jesus when he is just part of who we are? The psalmist provides an answer to that question: “With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments” (Psalm 119:10, NKJV, emphases mine). Quite pointedly, we cannot depend on a vocal minority to win our nation for God. Each Christian must put Jesus first and make every life decision based on his lordship. Remember: only a whole faith can change a whole nation. Let’s all think about it! -JLNJR
