The Power of Optimism
August 31, 2008
On this past Thursday evening, democratic presidential nominee Barak Obama delivered a swelling speech of hope as he defined his vision for the healing and revival of our country. On this week during the Republican National Convention, Senator John McCain, the republican nominee, will share his vision and plan of accomplishment. You may ask, “Why would anyone want to be president?” Think of it, friends. The next president of the United States will inherit a flurry of domestic and international challenges. Who in his right mind would desire such unrelenting pressure and responsibility? A person with the power of optimism, that’s who. This power is seen in the words of the English poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning when she wrote, “The blue of heaven is larger than the cloud.” The power of optimism is also clearly evident in the pages of Scripture. The psalmist declared, “Light arises in the darkness for the upright . . . For he will never be shaken . . . He will not fear evil tidings; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord” (Psalm 112:4-7, NASB). Neither Obama nor McCain have illusions that the job of being president will be easy. But they are optimistic that they can make a difference in the life of this nation. What about you, West Broad and friends? Are you optimistic, today? Can you see a bright future for yourself, your family, our city, and our church? Have you determined to face the often daunting task of everyday living with an enduring, unquenchable, driving belief that you can make a difference; that your situation can be better with the help of God (Rom. 8:31)? That is the power of optimism, friends. And the good news today is that it is a power you can surely possess! -JLNJR (Resource: Browning, Aurora Leigh, Book Seven)
