The Facts of Freedom

July 8, 2010

image-american-freedomWe celebrated recently an important event in American history — our declaration of independence.  234 years ago, leaders and residents of thirteen primitive colonies stood against the strongest military in the world and said, “Enough.”  We celebrate that event and thank God for the privilege of living in the United States of America.  But let us move past the fireworks, picnics, patriotic music, and family gatherings for a moment and  consider one compelling question.  Specifically, how did a poorly equipped, ragtag group of individuals stand against the mighty British Empire?  What motivated them to undertake this seemingly suicidal action?  I believe the answer is three-fold.  First, they were tired of unjust rule.  Secondly, they could envision a better future for themselves and their children. Finally, they were willing to sacrifice everything — even their lives — to make that vision reality.  With this resolve and by God’s grace and sovereign mercy, the American Colonies won their independence from Britain.  But have you thought about your independence?  Many today are victims of unjust rule (1 Jn. 5:19; Eph. 2:2).  Yet, we are challenged to look beyond that rule to the possibility of a limitless future of prosperity, purpose, and peace (Psa. 84:11; Jer. 32:27; Lk. 4:18).  Understand, however, that this future will not fall into our laps.  In order to obtain it, we must be willing to sacrifice everything — even our lives (Mk. 8:34-35).  These are the facts of freedom, friends.  When we embrace these facts, God will give victory.  Victory in our homes.  Victory in our lives.  And victory in our church.  Amen. —JLNJR
