The “Cap” of Christ
May 30, 2010
You know about the massive amount of oil spilling into the sea and onto the Louisiana Gulf Coast as a result of a collapsed BP drilling platform. Experts estimate that some 39 million gallons have been dispersed into the water, and this disaster is expected to have a crippling effect on the local environment. As of this writing, workers are endeavoring to cap the leak with a special mixture and thus stop the harmful eruption of oil. As I think about the eruption that is occurring more than 5,000 feet below the waves, I am reminded of the eruption that is occurring deep within our souls. But we do not spew oil; we spew sin (Rom. 3:10-18; Rom. 7:18-19). Only one being can “cap” that raging eruption: Jesus Christ. He is the only person who can arrest our plume of negative thoughts (Phil. 4:8). He is the only one who can cover our explosion of selfishness and immorality (Eph. 2:1-3). He is the sole solution for stopping the flood of doubt, fear, and uncertainty that so often bursts open deep within our hearts (2 Tim. 1:7; Eph. 2:11-12).
The workers in the Gulf have tried various solutions, but the oil is still spewing. Similarly, you may have sought various means to “plug” your sin problem (“I’ll be good;” “I’ll hope for the best;” “I’ll try to change”). Despite all this, your gushing has not stopped. And it never will. Why? Because there is only one who can halt our sinful discharge (Acts 4:12). Think about it, friend. You can continue to spew forth to your own destruction, or you can receive the cover of Christ that will enable you to enjoy a clean, productive, and holy life. “BP” or “JC?” You decide. —JLNJR
