Soaring With The Sisters

March 28, 2009

As we enjoy the final Sunday of National Women’s History Month, it is fitting that we celebrate and appreciate once more the accomplishments of “the sisters.”  Particularly, an increasing number of women are making their mark in the world of aviation.  Atlantic Southwest Airlines’ Captain Rachelle Jones and First Officer Stephanie Grant, along with flight attendants Diana Galloway and Robin Rogers, are believed to be the first African-American all-female crew to operate a scheduled commercial flight in the United States.  Men, this is more proof regarding the importance of encouraging our daughters to pursue studies in math and science.  But there is a spiritual lesson here, as well.  Captain Jones and First Officer Grant studied for years.  They trained extensively.  And when the time came, they flew.  We Christians find ourselves in a similar circumstance. Specifically, we are commanded to wrap ourselves in the word of God so that we can know and execute his will in our lives (Psa. 119:11 ).  Even as we trust in the Lord, we are buffeted by situations and experiences each day through which we learn (Rom. 5:3-5).  But in the end, the combination of “text and tribulation” enables us to flyas we enjoy victory in Jesus in this world and the one to come (1 Cor. 15:57; 1 Thess. 4:16-18).  So what can we say to all this, West Broad and friends?  Jones and Grant have achieved much.  But through God’s grace, you and I can also touch the clouds.  With that thought in mind, enjoy your flight, today.  Amen!  JLNJR (Resource: Jet Magazine, March 16, 2009, 3).
