Reality of the Reaper: Are You Ready?

August 17, 2008

You have probably heard of the recent deaths of Bernard McCullough (Bernie Mac) and Isaac Hayes. Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of these famous entertainers. But the passing of these men reminds us of something. It is something we do not like to think about; something we do not relish with gleeful anticipation. But it is something as real as your eye upon this article. That is, what happened to Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes will happen to you: you will die. The question is, are you living for that eventuality? I am constantly amazed by the number of persons who work hard to get an education so they can get a good job. Once they get the job, these same persons work tirelessly and efficiently to prove their worth and to position themselves for advancement. These individuals make every provision for the material attractions of life: relationships, possessions, leisure time, and so forth. But they are woefully unprepared and - worse yet - apathetic toward making provisions for their death. How does God feel about this attitude? Notice these words, “It is the same for all. There is one fate for the righteous and for the wicked . . . there is one fate for all men . . . they go to the dead (Ecclesiastes 9:2-3, NASB). But death is not the end, friend. Despite new age thinking and post-modern debate, there is an existence beyond the grave. Jesus said it this way, “Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs shall hear His voice, and shall come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment” (John 5:28-29). Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes are in eternity, but you are still here. Nevertheless, your time is coming. My friend, are you ready?
