On Real Estate and Real Estate

You may have heard of Madam C.J. Walker, the African-American businesswoman who made major contributions to the care of Black hair. Madam Walker was very successful, and in 1918 she moved into a beautiful home that offered views of the Hudson River. The Mediterranean-style edifice sat on more than seven acres and contained 20,000 square feet. The home also boasted eight bedrooms and five full baths. In addition, the property contained a 4,000-square-foot carriage house for guests. Given Madam Walker’s position in Black society, the palatial estate was as much a social statement as a primary residence. Unfortunately, for all its beauty and grandeur, Madam C.J. Walker lived in the house for less than two years. She died in 1919 in the canopy bed in her master bedroom from complications of high blood pressure. Friends, there is a lesson here. Madam Walker built a beautiful home, but she had to leave it behind. On the other hand, Jesus promised to build a home for his people that we will enjoy forever (Jn. 14:2-3)! As beautiful as Madam Walker’s home was, it pales in comparison with the glories God has in store for those who give their lives to him (1 Cor. 2:9). Well, what about you on today? Are you working to build a house (the cares of this world) that you will one day have to leave? Or are you walking with Jesus and building a home that you will enjoy throughout the ceaseless ages? Please think about it, and let’s all build wisely! — JLNJR (Resource: Ebony Magazine, 12/08, 152).
