On Accepting Yourself
June 22, 2008
You may have heard of Rupaul, the “drag queen supermodel.” In an issue of Newsweek Magazine, he was quoted as saying, “How can somebody tell me who I can or cannot love . . . Love yourself - no matter what people in Washington or religious right-wing people say.” Of course, what he is advocating is acceptance of his sinful lifestyle. But we should not be so quick to condemn Rupaul. Why? Simply because many Christians exhibit the same attitude. They live lives and engage in practices God clearly forbids, but respond by saying, “This is who I am, and I feel that I am all right with God. Nobody can judge or tell me what to do.” Well, we may accept our sin, but Heaven will not (Acts 17:30; Jn. 8:21). Yes, it is good to have confidence in and love oneself; however, in accepting ourselves we must never accept our iniquity. Please think about it! –JLNJR (Resource: Newsweek Magazine, 8/30/2004)
