Memories of a Marvelous Mother
May 10, 2009
God is presented in Scripture as a faithful, loving, caring provider (Psa. 145:16). As we enjoy this special Day and think about the graciousness of our mothers, you might recall the many times your Mom was like God; she met your needs lovingly and faithfully. I certainly recall such times. This past week, I was at a conference in Malibu, CA. When I was a child, our family lived in Santa Monica — a city located some thirty minutes up the coast from Malibu. I got directions and (with my Mom on the cell phone) actually “stumbled” and found the apartment in which I lived nearly forty years ago! I also found our old church building (the congregation still meets there) and walked up steps I had not traversed since I was six years old. As I related my experience to my mother (yes, I was still on the cell phone), she told me of the times she took me to the doctor while my Dad was at work. My Mom did not drive, so we would often walk or take the bus. She recounted how I would push my stroller instead of riding in it, much to the amusement of passing motorists (so I’ve always been a little independent — sue me!). As I stood in front of our old apartment building in the community of my early childhood, I thought about how Mom walked us to school, met with our teachers, kept us safe (along with our Dad), and made our lives happy and secure. The really cool thing about all this is that after forty-five years, she is still on the job. Thanks, Mom, and thanks to every marvelous mother on this great Day! —JLNJR
