In Praise of Women

March 14, 2009

You might be aware that March is Women’s History Month.  It is fitting to celebrate the people who contribute so significantly to our society.  We refer to women like Aida Alvarez, the first person of Puerto Rican descent to hold a Cabinet Level position.  Think also of Christy Walton, widow of John (Wal-Mart) Walton, and the richest woman in America with a net worth of $16.3 billion.   Recall Gertrude Elion, the biochemist who discovered the AIDS drug AZT, and Vera Wong, the successful New York designer.  We celebrate these modern women, but history is filled with the notable deeds of “the fairer sex.”  Recall Madame Curie and her discovery of two radioactive elements that laid the groundwork for future discoveries in nuclear physics and chemistry.  Think also of biblical history.  There we find women like Eve, “the mother of all the living” (Gen. 3:20.  Wow — that designation simply cannot be beat!).  We will also find wise Abigail (1 Sam. 25:32-34), courageous Esther (Est. 4:15-17), and the group of women who supported the ministry of Jesus (Lk. 8:1-3).  Women continue to play a major role not only in secular society, but in the church, as well.  Membership in American congregations is predominantly female.   What does that tell us, West Broad?  Only that we are truly blessed to have the talent and devotion of the women who form the majority of our faith family.  We salute you, ladies, and pray that God will continue to bless your lives as you walk in faith before him.
