Faithful Foolishness
October 19, 2008
I recently saw the movie, “Religuous.” This documentary by comedian Bill Maher essentially asks the question, “How can sensible people believe in God or religion?” To his credit, Maher seemed to approach the question by honestly seeking answers from people of faith. Unfortunately, people of faith are confused! A national study presented the statement, “Many religions can lead to eternal life.” How many people agreed with this idea?
All protestant denominations 66%
Catholics 79%
Jewish 82%
Muslim 56%
Friends, I have to agree with Maher: this is ridiculous - er, religuous! Many believers think what they believe is not universally essential. In their view, other paths or choices exist that will please God. The problem with this assessment is that it is based not on divine revelation but human will. Jesus Christ said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through me” (Jn. 14:6). Protestants, Catholics, Jews, and Muslims may be confused regarding the way to heaven, but Jesus is not! The foolishly faithful must rethink their position. The question is, how foolish are you? - JLNJR (Resource: Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life)
