Deciding on Deacons
May 23, 2010
If you were present last Sunday, you were able to enjoy (I hope!) our lesson on “Deacons: Why?” During that discussion, we focused on events recorded in Acts 6:1-6 and learned that the church at Jerusalem faced three realities. First, there was a problem (a membership need that had to be met). This was followed by priority (spiritual leaders could not turn away from ministry of the word to address day-to-day member needs). Finally, we saw a process (members selected men who would serve to meet those needs). We complemented the sermon with discussions in our Growth Groups on Sunday afternoon and Bible study Wednesday night. In fact, our Wednesday study centered on answering questions presented by members regarding the deacon selection process. If you missed that conversation, you are strongly encouraged to talk with someone who was present. As we say, “you cannot make a spiritually informed decision if you are spiritually uninformed.” Our selection of deacons will not be based on what we think, feel, or prefer; it will be based on dictates of the word of God. As such, we move to our second question, today. As we consider the topic, “Deacons: Who?,” we will explore the biblical qualities these men — and their wives — must possess. The sermon will be followed this Wednesday by additional discussion and exploration as we continue to address member questions related to this exciting but very serious undertaking. The West Broad Church of Christ is on the move, family. Please listen attentively, pray fervently, and participate widely as together we go forward in Jesus. Oh, yeah! —JLNJR
