An Assessment of Attitude
August 30, 2010
Did you ever experience a really bad day? How did you respond? Well, there was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and noticed she had only three hairs on her head. “Well,” she said, “I think I’ll braid my hair today.” So she did, and she had a wonderful day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror, and saw that she had only two hairs on her head. “Hmmm,” she thought. “I think I’ll part my hair down the middle today.” So she did, and she had a grand day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror, and noticed that she had only one hair on her head. “Well, today I’m going to wear my hair in a pony tail.” So she did, and she had a fun, fun day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror, and noticed that there wasn’t a single hair on her head. “Yayy!” she exclaimed. “I don’t have to fix my hair today!” What do you see in this woman, West Broad and friends? Only that attitude is everything. Think about it. We often lament our position and cry about our plight; circumstances and situations can sometimes make us grieve. This is understandable because life can be difficult, sometimes (Acts 14:22). Regardless of our challenges, however, I believe God is calling us to develop the attitude of the woman in our story (James 1:2-4). What does that mean to us as members (and friends) of the West Broad Church of Christ? How can we assess our attitude and ensure that our response is God’s response? It’s simple. Determine right now that you will engage this week by being kinder than necessary because, like you, most of the people you meet are fighting some kind of battle. With that reality in mind, resolve to live simply, love generously, care deeply, speak kindly, and pray continually. Why? Because as James reminds us, life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass . . . it’s about learning to dance in the rain. Take care, my friends, and I hope you’ll dance this week. —JLNJR (Resource: Internet Forward, 8/23/10)
