Actions for a Happy New Year

January 1, 2009

The New Year is invariably a time for introspection. How can we make our lives better? I believe the best way to answer this question is from the perspective of faith. That is, what can you do in 2009 to improve your life and walk in greater harmony with God, neighbor, and self? One writer proposes five actions. First, build your faith (Psa. 119:10). Feeding your soul through regular church attendance, prayer, and time alone with the Lord will strengthen your core values and connect you more fully with the Father’s will and way. Secondly, revisit your priorities (Matt. 6:33). Are your “main things” really main things? If they are, are you pursuing them in the best way possible, or should you come up with a new plan? Third, be a loving friend (Prov. 17:17). Endeavor to be a positive, upward thinking person, and pour out your compassion and dedication on others. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at what you get in return. Fourth, empower your inner circle (Prov. 17:10). These are the people closest to you — relatives, friends, and advisers — who have your best interests at heart. As you formulate plans and make decisions in your life, make sure these people tell you what you need to hear, not what they think you’d like to hear. Fifth and finally, give back (Prov. 11:25). Too many people are self-centered and ego-focused. If you want to enjoy a better 2009, be diligent about sharing your blessings, time and talent with others. Okay, we know. Now, let’s act! –JLNJR (Resource: Essence, 12/08, 204).
