On Making “The List”
October 7, 2009
You are familiar with “lists.” There is the Fortune 500 List, The Neilson’s Ratings List, People Magazine’s Best/Worst Dressed List, and so many others. Well, there is another list of which you may not have heard. In January 2009, a survey was conducted in which Americans were asked to identify the top ten people they considered to be heroes. The list was as follows:
1. Barak Obama
2. Jesus Christ
3. Martin Luther King, Jr.
4. Ronald Reagan
5. George W. Bush
6. Abraham Lincoln
7. John McCain
8. John F. Kennedy
9. Chesley Sullenberger (landed in Hudson River)
10. Mother Teresa
Now, I admire and respect President Obama. But he beats Jesus Christ? Say it ain’t so! In fact, the Lord should not even be on this list, in my thinking. Why? Because he is greater than any human (Jn. 1:1). His work is beyond any human’s (Jn. 3:17; Col. 1:14). And his name eclipses any human’s (Phil. 2:9-11). Including Jesus on a list of human heroes is like including a bull elephant on a list of ants. There is simply no comparison! That being true, instead of putting Christ on our list, human beings should be concerned about being on his (Rev. 20:15). As you honestly (and biblically) examine your life right now, are you a person Jesus Christ would claim as his own? Would your name be in his book? Would you make his list? Come to Jesus. Get on the list that matters! —JLNJR (Resource: Rev Magazine, May/June 09, 38)
