Mission and Mobilization
September 6, 2009
The mission of the West Broad Church of Christ is to share the gospel of Jesus in downtown Richmond. By God’s grace, we have accomplished much good in our congregation’s ten year history. Notwithstanding, I am convinced that the key to even greater growth and community impact lies in one word: mobilization. A mobilized congregation is one in which 80% of the members are involved in some form of weekly or monthly ministry. In addition, the leadership works aggressively to equip those members for ministry. Did you see it, friends? A healthy, focused, relevant, vibrant church is made up of committed, active members partnered with competent, Spirit-led leadership (Acts 8:4; Eph. 4:11-12; 2 Tim. 2:2). Please do not confuse this with a few members or “core” group.” In a mobilized congregation, the vast majority of the church is involved continually in worship, Bible study, and engaging, meaningful ministry. This involvement leads to an increase in baptisms. It also leads to the development of mature Christians who will make increasing contributions to the work, life, and mission of the church. I see a bright future for the West Broad Church of Christ. But every member must see that future — not a few. Every member must eat, sleep, and dream about making disciples. And new disciples must immerse themselves into learning about the Lord, submitting themselves to his commands, and growing in their faith. All these actions will enable us to become a mobilized church that is (1) biblically grounded, (2) culturally relevant, and (3) transformative. These traits will allow us to effectively and efficiently carry out our mission of proclaiming Christ in downtown Richmond. But remember that you cannot count on “somebody else” to do your part, friend. No, mobilization begins with you! —JLNJR (Resource: Outreach, May/June 09, 63)
