Retirement Planning — A Different Perspective

May 1, 2010

photo-tombstone1You probably know that several celebrities have died in recent months.  We think of socialite Casey Johnson, singer Teddy Pendergrass, actor Corey Haim, Dynasty’s John Forsythe, and Gunsmoke’s and Trapper John, M.D.’s Pernell Roberts.  Our hearts and prayers certainly go out to the families of these famous personalities.  But the passing of the rich and famous reminds us of something.  It is something that we do not like to think about, but it is something as certain as your eye upon this article.  That is, what happened to the persons referenced above will happen to you: you will die.  The question is, are you living for that eventuality?

Millions of people work hard to get an education so they can get a good job.  Upon securing employment, they work tirelessly and efficiently to prove their worth and position themselves for advancement.   These people make every preparation for the material attractions of life: relationships, possessions, leisure time, and so forth.  But they are woefully unprepared and worse yet apathetic toward preparation for their death.  How does God feel about this attitude?  Notice these words, It is the same for all.  There is one fate for the righteous and for the wicked . . . There is one fate for all men . . . They go to the dead (Eccl. 9:2-3, NASB).  But death is not the end, friend.  Despite new age thinking and post-modern debate, there is an existence beyond the grave.  Jesus said it this way, Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear his voice, and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment(Jn. 5:28-29, NASB).

What do we see here?  Two important realities.  First, people from all walks of life are dying, and one day so will you.  Secondly, God has spoken clearly and concisely regarding death.  It will be an event through which you enter an eternity filled with beautiful bliss or one marked by hellish horror.  Which way will you go?  Think about it, friend — but act quickly . . . retirement is coming!
