Our Deacons
The West Broad Church of Christ was blessed by God when the congregation’s first deacons were ordained on July 25, 2010. We look forward to many years of service as these men lend their unique gifts and talents toward the work of Jesus in downtown Richmond.
Brother Bernard S. Adams is our Deacon for Safety and Security and Teen Ministry. Bernard is a Retired Sergeant, NYPD, and is currently employed as a Deck Supervisor for Virginia Commonwealth University Parking and Transportation. He and his wife, Sharon, have two children: Bernard S. Adams, Jr. (17), and Danielle P.M. Adams (14). Bernard has been a member of the Church of Christ for nearly thirty years and has worshiped in New York with the South Jamaica Church of Christ, Flushing Church of Christ, Springfield Gardens Church of Christ and, most recently, in Richmond with the West Broad Church of Christ. His past service experience includes work as a youth coordinator, drama ministry coordinator, benevolence ministry coordinator, STARS coordinator (Striving to Achieve Righteous Souls, a youth program), song leader, and choral group director. Bernard is a busy man, but he also takes time for fun. His hobbies include travel, teaching, singing, exercising, and fellowship with the saints.
Brother Jerome Clarke, Jr. serves as our Deacon for Outreach/Service and Involvement. Jerome is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Owner/Operator of Clarke Financial Associates, a full-service accounting firm. He and his wife Erika have been married for twenty-three years, and they have two children: a son Jay (21) who was recently married, and a daughter Jessica (18) who recently graduated high school. Baptized into Christ in 1987, Jerome has served churches in various capacities. Among these were youth activity coordinator, married couples fellow-share group facilitator, and financial secretary. In addition to his responsibilities as deacon, he currently serves West Broad as one of the congregation’s Growth Group leaders. Jerome believes in care of the whole person — soul and body. To that end, he enjoys golfing, running, nature, and outings to the beach. He is also an action movie fan who loves spending time with family and friends.
Brother Douglas Smith is our Deacon for Facilities Maintenance and Member Encouragement and Retention. Doug is employed by the Iron Mountain Company as a Transportation Service Specialist. He and his wife Earlene have been married for twenty years and have two sons, Tres’ (13) and Donovan (7). Doug has worked in congregations for many years helping and encouraging others and came to faith in Christ through the example of his parents, both of whom are still active in the Lord’s work. His schedule is pretty full, but Doug makes every effort to take some “down time” by enjoying visits with area congregations and time with family and friends.
